Helpful Tips:
- Factors such as right-sizing, system updating and even the type of refrigerant used, can significantly affect HVAC efficiency.
- An electronic air cleaner is 40x more efficient in removing unwanted particles from your home than a standard disposable filter.
- A variable speed heat pump can reduce your energy costs by as much as 40%.
- Adjusting the thermostat settings to more closely correspond to those temperatures outside will slash your energy bills.
- Changing your thermostat setting in increments of more than 5 degrees will cause your HVAC unit to use more energy.
Signs your air conditioner may be failing:
- It takes longer than usual for your air conditioner to cool down your home
- You utility bill is getting higher over time
- Water appears on your ceiling (if your unit is located in the attic)
- *The average lifespan of an air conditioning unit is 10 to 12 years
- When your air conditioning stops working:
- Check your circuit breaker - both at the outdoor unit and in your house at the panel box - to make sure it's in the ON position (reset breaker).
- Check indoor coil to see if it's frozen (you will be able to see ice on it). The coil will be on your indoor air handler or at your furnace.
- If the coil is frozen, the causes are most likely: it is low on refrigerant, the blower is not pushing at peak efficiency, or
- the coil is dirty. In this case the unit will need servicing by a professional service technician.
